Golden Week 2009 – Japanese Holidays
The end of April and beginning of May usually signifies the start of Golden Week in Japan. Golden Week period is a celebration of 4 national holidays within 7 days.
Many Japanese offices close for about a week to 10 days, depending on the calender. People take a vacation and travel around the country or abroad, so tourist attractions in Japan are very crowded during Golden Week. Also, airports and train stations in Japan are overflowing with people. It is hard to get reservations for accommodations and transportation during Golden Week.
Golden Week Celebration in Japan
The national holidays making up the Golden Week are:
- April 29 Showa Day (Showa no hi):
April 29 is the birthday of former Emperor Showa - May 3
Constitution Day (Kenpo kinenbi):
New Constitution was place in effect after the war - May 4
Greenery Day (Midori no hi):
Japan’s version of Earth Day. The day is to dedicated to preserve the environment and nature - May 5
Children’s Day (Kodomo no hi):

Golden week reminds me of the upcoming hawaii’s golden anniversary. hmmm.. maybe it’s time for me to take a vacation too?
